Since NAFEN™ is pure aluminum oxide—one of the hardest substances next to diamond—it provides an increase in the hardness of coating systems, which leads to better resistance to abrasion. NAFEN™ also—just as with adhesives—provides reinforcement to the coating formulation, which helps to prevent crack propagation after impact, which is a common issue with civilian watercraft.

The gel coats and protective coatings (e.g. corrosion resistant) on marine vessels are the first line of defense against environmental damage—whether it be micro abrasions from salt spray or corrosion on metal components. Therefore, they should be as tough as possible to protect the composite or metal substrates below. NAFEN™ can be used in existing systems and provide greater impact toughness and abrasion resistance in these performance applications with very small concentrations (0.5%).
